About Graduation

What is Graduation?

Graduation is the action of receiving or conferring an academic degree or the ceremony that is sometimes associated, where students become Graduates. It is the conferral or receipt of an academic degree or diploma marking completion of studies.

The graduation itself is also called commencement, convocation or invocation. Before the graduation, candidates are referred to as Graduands.

After degree completion, graduates can be referred to by their graduating year, and are collectively known as Alumni.

The graduation procession may include the Board of Trustees, special guests, the academic staff and candidates. During the ceremony, the faculty usually wear their academic regalia at the formal ceremony, as do the trustees and degree candidates.

"Graduation" at the college and university level occurs when the presiding officer confers degrees upon candidates, either individually or en masse, even if graduates physically receive their diploma later.

What is Alumnus?

A graduate, or former student of a specific school, college, or university.

What is the difference between Alumnus and Alumna?

Alumnus (in Latin a masculine noun) refers to a male graduate or former student; the plural is alumni. An alumna (in Latin a feminine noun) refers to a female graduate or former student; the plural is alumnae.

Why is Alumni mainly used to define a graduate?

Traditionally, the masculine plural alumni has been used for groups composed of both sexes and is still widely so used: the alumni of KeMU. Sometimes, to avoid any suggestion of sexism, both terms are used for mixed groups: the alumni/alumnae of KeMU or the alumni and alumnae of KeMU.

What is Alma Mater?

  1. A school, college, or university which one has attended or from which one has graduated.
  2. The song or hymn of a school, college, or university.

Where is the graduation ceremony held?

The KeMU graduation ceremony is held at “The Pavilion” in the main square of our main campus in Meru, Kenya.

Is accommodation provided for the graduation ceremony?
