Satellite Centres – “Opportunity is where you find it, not where it finds you.” In 2005/06 the University embarked on re-engineering of academic programmes to rationalize all its programmes to meet market and customer needs. The University nurtures an entrepreneurial culture and therefore thrives to look for opportunities in parts of the market that have not been fully explored. It is in this regard that campuses have been opened in Nairobi, Nakuru, Nyeri and Mombasa to increase access to higher education in those regions. This has given an opportunity to many students from Africa to access higher education at different entry points. It has also expanded the University and enabled us to open education opportunities and diversify our product lines. The Centres operate on a ‘niche strategy’ which enables us to offer unique, specialized and highly marketable programmes. We have gained early leadership in some of these programmes and we have to maintain this position. We identify a market for what the product does considering all customers and exploiting demographic changes. We never stop asking “what is our business?” For this reason, we endeavor to prune unjustifiable programmes and activities, set goals to improve productivity, manage growth and develop our employees. Currently we have approximately 2000 students in the satellite system. Our vision is to have 5000 students’ enrollment by 2010 and offer a variety of degrees up to doctoral level. This is ambitious but attainable. Our main focus remains excellence, quality products and services. The University realizes that a learning institution must continuously re-evaluate itself and make adjustments whenever necessary to meet internal and external challenges. This involves monitoring the environment, work teams and exercise creative leadership to ensure we are headed in the right direction. Continuous improvement of the Curriculum, teaching methods, teaching facilities, class sizes and quality of staff and students is mandatory. We also perform periodic academic audit for benchmarking and quality control. ICT has been integrated in most of our business processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery and to transform the institution. The Millennium Development Goals remain crucially relevant to higher education and Universities that wish to remain relevant must seriously look for solutions afflicting societies. The MDGs will be measures of quality for universities and KEMU remains consistent in mainstreaming the MDGs ideal in all our programmes and operations. To the graduating students who are also the pioneer class at the Centers, Congratulations! Thank you for your patience and endless support, for walking the journey with us. Make learning a life long habit. Always ask yourself what you wish to be remembered for. Keep asking those ahead of you in age or experience how they went about ‘reporting’ themselves and keep reinventing yourself for your own survival. “Whatever you do, whatever happens, do not keep your eyes off the ball”. To cater for the increasing demand of higher education, KEMU has opened up several centres, namely: |
