KeMU joins the world to mark World Mangroves Day
On Saturday 23/7/22 staff and students of KeMU Mombasa Campus were at the Bangladesh Tudor creek in Jomvu Sub-county for an intensive coastline clean-up and mangroves restoration. This initiative, led by the Campus Director and 2022/23 Mr/Miss KeMU Mombasa Campus team mobilised resources to purchase and plant over 1,200 Mangroves seedlings through Bigship Adopt A Site- a CBO in Mikindani Mombasa. This was a pre-event of the World Mangroves Day which will be celebrated globally on Tue 26/7/22. KeMU also used this opportunity to sensitive the Bangladesh community on Entrepreneuship and basic business skills, Life Skills and Mental Health. The director, Dr Winfred Kithinji also applauded the community and partners for contributing to the UN agenda to achieve 20pc mangroves forest cover by 2030. Tudor creek extends to 2,000ha and only 63ha has mangroves forest cover so far.
The other partners who joined KeMU in this event were Family Bank (Nkrumah Road branch Mombasa), Close the Gap/Boost Your Learning project, DCI - Kilindini Officers among others.
